Renting hanbok for a Seoul palace visit can be a beautiful way to experience Korean clothing, color and architecture. The easiest first visit is not about choosing the most dramatic outfit. It is about getting a complete set that fits, understanding the rental terms, walking comfortably and treating both the clothing and the heritage site with care.
The fast answer
Choose the palace and weather first, then compare rental time, sizing, language, included accessories, deposit, damage and late-return rules. For current palace free admission, wear a qualifying upper garment and lower garment properly, keep the jeogori fastened and follow staff instructions. Save the shop location and return deadline before entering the palace.

Step 1: choose the palace before the outfit
Check the palace’s current opening day, entry time and any restricted or separately booked area. Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung have different layouts and schedules. A night program or special garden entry may use separate rules even when daytime palace admission is simple.
Choose a rental shop that leaves a realistic walking route to both the palace entrance and the return counter. A low price is not useful if the return trip is difficult or the shop closes before your visit ends.
Step 2: compare the full rental—not only the headline price
- Rental duration and the exact late-return charge
- Traditional, modern or themed hanbok category
- Jeogori and skirt or pants included
- Inner layers, underskirt, bag, hair accessory and shoes
- Hair styling and optional accessories
- Deposit, identification and payment method
- Damage, stain, rain and cancellation policy
- Changing room, luggage storage and final return time
Ask which items cost extra before dressing. Keep your passport and payment details private; if identification or a deposit is required, use the shop’s official counter and obtain a receipt.
Step 3: request fit and mobility—not just a color
Tell staff your approximate height and any mobility, sensory or modesty needs. Ask whether inclusive sizes, pants, longer skirts, lighter layers or accessible changing space are available. Try sitting, taking a short step and lifting your arms before leaving the shop.
The skirt or pants should allow safe walking without dragging under your shoes. If the garment feels loose, tight or difficult on stairs, ask staff to adjust it rather than fixing it with an unsafe pin yourself.
Step 4: understand the current free-admission clothing rules
The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center currently says both traditional and modernized hanbok may qualify, but the basic form requires an upper garment and a lower garment: a jeogori with a skirt or hanbok-style pants. A coat alone, a jeogori with jeans, or a hanbok skirt with a T-shirt does not meet the guideline.
- Keep the jeogori on and properly fastened.
- Wear the complete upper-and-lower combination.
- Follow public-decorum and on-site staff instructions.
- Do not assume an outfit qualifies because a rental listing says “palace style.”
Entrance staff apply the current official rule. Recheck the guideline and be prepared to purchase ordinary admission if the outfit does not qualify or the program uses a separate ticket system.
Step 5: dress for Seoul’s weather
Hanbok photographs well, but the palace grounds involve exposed courtyards, stone paths and considerable walking. Check temperature, rain, heat and air-quality guidance before dressing.
- Hot weather: choose lighter layers, carry water and take shade breaks.
- Cold weather: ask about permitted inner layers and an appropriate outer garment.
- Rain: confirm the shop’s wet-weather and stain policy and use shoes with grip.
- All seasons: prioritize secure, comfortable footwear over a photo-only choice.
Step 6: take photos without damaging the palace experience

- Stay outside restricted areas and follow ropes, signs and staff directions.
- Do not climb, sit on, lean against or attach anything to heritage structures.
- Keep gates, central walkways, stairs and emergency routes clear.
- Wait for strangers to leave your frame rather than photographing them closely.
- Keep the setup brief when others are waiting for the same viewpoint.
- Check current rules before using tripods, lights, drones or commercial equipment.
A palace is a protected heritage site, not a private photo studio. Quiet observation and respectful movement are part of the experience.
Step 7: protect the garment and your belongings
Use the included bag or a secure hands-free bag and keep valuables zipped. Avoid food, drinks, makeup transfer and rough surfaces while dressed. If something tears or stains, contact the rental shop promptly instead of hiding the problem or attempting an unapproved repair.
Ask before leaving luggage, a passport or electronics at the shop. Use a locker or documented storage process where available and keep the claim ticket private.
Step 8: plan the return before the palace visit
Save the shop’s Korean name, address, nearest exit and closing time. Set two alarms: one to leave the palace and one for the rental deadline. Allow time for photographs, restroom stops, changing and queues.
Return every included item, inspect the receipt and confirm that any deposit is settled according to the agreed method. Do not schedule an airport train, concert or medical appointment immediately after a tightly timed rental.
A realistic three-hour route
- 0:00–0:35: fit, movement check, accessories and rental-term confirmation.
- 0:35–0:50: walk to the palace and confirm entry.
- 0:50–2:15: tour one main route with two or three short photo stops.
- 2:15–2:35: leave the palace and return to the shop.
- 2:35–3:00: change, return all items and check the receipt or deposit.
Adjust this sample to the shop’s actual rental period and palace size. Do not use it as a promise that every palace visit fits into three hours.
