Changdeokgung Palace · 창덕궁

Changdeokgung follows the natural terrain and is recognized by UNESCO for the harmony of its buildings, courtyards and landscape.

Why visit

Established in 1405 and rebuilt after wartime destruction, Changdeokgung served as the principal royal residence for long periods. Its less rigid layout gives the palace a distinctly different character from Gyeongbokgung.

Secret Garden

The rear garden is a major reason to visit, but access rules, separate tickets and timed tours can apply. Reserve or confirm availability before arrival rather than assuming walk-in access.

Practical check

Give the palace at least two hours and more when including the garden. Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung are adjacent, but ticketing, entrances and closing days should be confirmed before combining them.

Plan a visit that fits your day

VEMORIQ planning notes · Expanded October 3, 2026. Suggested routes are editorial choices; confirm live admission, service and transport details with the relevant operator.

Decide whether the garden is essential

Choose between a palace-only visit and a palace-plus-garden visit before arranging the rest of the day. If the garden is the main reason for coming, check its current reservation, language and timed-entry arrangements first. When a suitable slot is unavailable, the palace buildings still offer a worthwhile route; do not build an itinerary around unconfirmed access.

A route that explains the landscape

Notice how the sequence of gates, courts and residences responds to the terrain. UNESCO identifies that relationship with the natural setting as central to the palace’s significance. Instead of looking only for symmetrical photographs, observe changes in level, direction and enclosure as you move between spaces. Keep time for the transition from the formal courts to the quieter areas.

Booking and arrival checklist

Save the booking confirmation, entry time, meeting point and any separate palace admission requirement. A confirmation for one program is not necessarily a pass for every area. Arrive with a buffer for the gate and ticket check; a late arrival can disrupt a timed itinerary even if the grounds remain open. Current operator notices take precedence over an old travel blog.

Choose the continuation by energy

For another royal site, compare adjoining Changgyeonggung and its separate access arrangements. For a slower finish, use the Anguk and Bukchon area for a seated break. Keep voices low in residential lanes and avoid turning a palace day into a hurried sequence of unrelated districts.

Official reference: check current visitor information. Hours, prices, stock, reservations and access can change.
