Gyeongbokgung Palace · 경복궁
The first and largest main palace of the Joseon dynasty is the clearest place to read the capital’s royal layout. Start at Gwanghwamun, follow the ceremonial axis to Geunjeongjeon, then slow down around Gyeonghoeru and Hyangwonjeong.
Why visit
Gyeongbokgung was founded in 1395 as the primary palace of the new Joseon dynasty. Its broad courtyards, throne hall, pond pavilion and mountain backdrop make it the strongest first palace for visitors who want to understand Seoul’s royal plan.
Plan your time
Allow at least two to three hours. The National Palace Museum and National Folk Museum can turn the stop into a half day. Changing-of-the-guard events, seasonal night openings and temporary closures should be checked on the official site.
Practical check
Gyeongbokgung Station is the usual subway approach. Wear comfortable shoes, arrive before the busiest tour groups when possible, and confirm the current closing day, admission and guided-tour schedule before travel.
