Hamdeok Beach: choose between a shore break and a Seoubong walk
Hamdeok suits a northeast-Jeju day when you want sea views without making every stop an excursion. The beach and neighboring Seoubong offer two different experiences: an easy waterfront pause, or a more active walk with elevation. Decide which your group wants before choosing footwear and how much time to leave.
Start with the correct place and season
Use 함덕해수욕장, 525 Johamhaean-ro, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si in your map app. Do not confuse it with Hyeopjae on the west coast. If your accommodation is elsewhere on the island, compare the complete journey there and back before treating Hamdeok as a spare-hour stop.
The official 2026 beach season ran from June 24 to September 6, with managed bathing hours of 10:00–19:00 and no night swimming. As of this October 3 review, that season has ended. Plan an off-season visit as a coastal outing, not as a guarantee of supervised swimming. Follow current notices and barriers even when the water looks inviting.
Two ways to spend your time
For a gentle visit: start at the waterfront, take time to look across the beach, then choose a nearby meal or café. Keep the return pickup point simple and recognizable. This option is useful when children are tired, the weather is unsettled or someone in the group would rather avoid an uphill path.
For a longer walk: consider the Seoubong side after checking the path and wind. Treat the uphill section as an additional activity, not a required part of seeing Hamdeok. Turn around while everyone still has comfortable energy for the descent and the walk back. A scenic hillside route should not be assumed to offer the same access as the main waterfront.
Build a realistic northeast-coast day
Allow around 60–90 minutes for a beach stroll and a short break; add more time if you include the hillside, a full meal or a leisurely café visit. These are VEMORIQ planning suggestions rather than official tour durations. Choose another nearby stop instead of crossing to western Jeju simply to tick off a second beach. The time saved is often more valuable than another photograph.
Before setting off on foot, save the name of your bus stop or parking area. Check the actual departure in your transport app and leave room for the walk back. If using a taxi, agree on a roadside meeting point where a vehicle can stop, rather than sending a pin in the middle of the sand.
What to bring and what to leave flexible
A wind-resistant layer, drinking water and shoes with a secure fit make the visit easier outside summer. Keep loose belongings secured in gusts. Let cloud, wind and walking energy determine whether you add Seoubong; there is no need to force the longer route to make the stop worthwhile. If your main aim is a quiet conversation or a meal with a view, budget for that experience instead of an ambitious walking checklist.
