Jeju First-Timer Guide: Top Attractions, Beaches, Rental Cars, Food & Cafés

Three peak-season views of Seongsan Ilchulbong, its summit trail and young international travelers in Jeju

How should first-time visitors plan Jeju?

Jeju rewards travelers who plan by geography, not by a long checklist. Choose one overnight base for a short stay, then group sights into east (Seongsan and Gujwa), west (Hallim and Andeok), or south (Seogwipo). Keep the first and last days light: airport collection, rental-car paperwork and coastal traffic can consume more time than the map suggests.

JEJU FIRST-TRIP GUIDE · REVIEWED SEPTEMBER 2026 This guide combines five first-trip attractions, five beaches, rental-car planning and ten food and café stops.

Ranking note: The numbered lists are VEMORIQ editorial picks based on practical value for English-speaking first-time visitors. They are not an official government ranking. A numbered place is a suggested planning order, not a measure of quality or a promise of year-round swimming.

The island map uses the Jeju-si and Seogwipo-si administrative boundaries and flags the five first-trip areas. Driving times change with weather, traffic and the mountain route.

Choose the right day before choosing the attraction

If you have only two full days

Choose east or west for each day. East pairs Seongsan with Woljeongri or Gimnyeong; west pairs Hyeopjae with O’sulloc. Crossing the island twice to collect more landmarks usually produces more windshield time than memorable time on site.

If the forecast turns

Keep Hallasan and exposed beaches flexible. Strong wind, rain or low visibility can change the value of a summit or boat day. Swap in an indoor museum, a leisurely meal or a Jeju City/Seogwipo café circuit, then recheck official trail and beach notices before heading out.

Photo timing: Seongsan’s side light is attractive near sunrise, while Hyeopjae’s west-facing coast is a sunset candidate. Do not plan a sunrise ascent without first checking the day’s opening time and weather.

Top 5 attractions for first-time visitors

1. Seongsan Ilchulbong

Three peak-season views of Seongsan Ilchulbong, its trail and young international travelers

Address: 284-12 Ilchul-ro, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si.
Why save it: UNESCO-listed volcanic scenery, a short but steep summit route and an east-coast sunrise. Allow roughly 50–90 minutes and check weather.

2. Hallasan National Park

Three summer views of Hallasan trails and young international hikers

Where: Choose the correct trailhead before departure.
Critical plan: If your goal is Baengnokdam, check the official Hallasan reservation and real-time trail-status pages for Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa before committing to a date. Other trails have different rules. Start early, respect turnaround times and carry water, layers and shoes suited to changing weather.

3. Hyeopjae + Geumneung west coast

Three peak-season views of Hyeopjae and Geumneung beaches with young international travelers

Hyeopjae address: 2497-1 Hyeopjae-ri, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si.
Why save it: Clear shallow water, pale sand, Biyangdo views and one of Jeju’s most practical sunset areas.

4. Manjanggul Lava Tube

Three interior views of Manjanggul Lava Tube and young international visitors on the official walkway

Address: 182 Manjanggul-gil, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si.
Current status: The cave reopened in May 2026 after safety work, according to the Korean Heritage Agency. Access can still change; confirm the operator’s current notice before driving to Gujwa. Expect a cool, damp, uneven walkway: grippy shoes and a light layer are more useful than a photo-ready outfit.

5. Camellia Hill + O’sulloc

Garden, tea field and café views at Camellia Hill and O'sulloc with young travelers

Camellia Hill: 166 Byeongak-ro, Andeok-myeon.
O’sulloc: 15 Sinhwayeoksa-ro, Andeok-myeon.
Plan: Combine gardens, tea fields, photo stops and dessert; flowering conditions vary by season.

Three-day and four-day route

3-day first trip

Day 1 east: Hamdeok → Manjanggul (if open) → Woljeongri → Seongsan.

Day 2 west: Hyeopjae/Geumneung → O’sulloc → Camellia Hill. Add Jungmun only if you have a car, an early start and energy after the garden stops.

Day 3: Hallasan reserved hike, or a weather-safe Jeju City/Seogwipo day.

4-day relaxed trip

Add Gimnyeong and more coastal time on the east, or split O’sulloc/Camellia and Jungmun into separate days. Keep one flexible weather block.

  4. Jeju Baekjeong Hallim — black-pork stop for the Hyeopjae route.
  5. Jeju City Black Pork Street — convenient cluster; compare current menus and queues.

Cafés 6–10

  1. O’sulloc Tea Museum café — tea desserts and fields.
  2. Mippeun Bakery — west/southwest bakery stop.
  3. Yudong Coffee — central Seogwipo coffee stop.
  4. Anthracite Jeju — Hallim roastery atmosphere.

Arrival reality check

From Seoul, the typical choice is a Gimpo–Jeju flight of roughly 1 hour 10 minutes in the air, plus airport time and ground transport. Ferries take much longer and are weather-sensitive. Jeju’s cross-island driving time can exceed 1–2 hours depending on route and congestion, so location grouping matters more than collecting every pin.
