Manjanggul is an underground walking visit in northeastern Jeju, best planned around access conditions rather than a photograph of the cave. Allow room in your itinerary for the journey to the entrance, the return walk underground and a change of plan if access is restricted. It pairs naturally with a Gujwa-area day rather than a tightly timed trip across the island.
Is Manjanggul open? Read the date on the notice
The official Jeju heritage page describes Manjanggul as partly open to visitors. Visit Jeju’s September 2026 Chuseok operating notice also marked the cave open during that holiday. These are more recent planning references than older closure announcements, but they do not guarantee admission on your chosen day. Check the dated official operating notice and confirm current arrangements with the cave office at +82-64-710-7903 before making a special journey.
A festival event near the cave and a specialist expedition are different from ordinary visitor admission. An announcement about a guided exploration of restricted sections is not permission to enter them independently. When comparing information, look for the publication date, the exact section covered and whether the notice concerns general visitors or selected participants.
What you are visiting
The heritage authority describes a lava tube about 7.4 km long, with an ordinary visitor section of about 1 km reached through the second entrance. The roughly 7.6 m lava column at the end of that section is a key feature. The full cave length is therefore not the length of the tourist route. Official cave description and visitor guidance.
Think of the visit as looking closely at a volcanic landscape from inside it. Pause at the interpretation signs to connect the shapes around you with flowing and cooling lava. Trying to photograph every surface can make the walk feel rushed; choose a few stopping points and leave room for people passing in both directions.
Hours, tickets and the last admission
At our source check, Visit Jeju’s attraction listing displayed 09:00–18:00, ticket sales and entry ending at 17:00, and closure on the first Wednesday of each month. It listed standard adult admission at KRW 4,000 and youth/child admission at KRW 2,000. Confirm age bands, concessions and any temporary restrictions at the official ticket point; these published figures are a planning reference, not a live booking quote.
Do not treat the final admission time as a recommended arrival time. Leave a margin for buying tickets, preparing clothing and walking without hurry. If this is your last stop before a flight or ferry, move it earlier or choose a more flexible outing.
Getting to the correct entrance
Save 만장굴, 제주시 구좌읍 만장굴길 182 in your map app. Check the final walking leg as well as the bus ride: a stop whose name includes the cave may not be at the visitor entrance. The heritage page warns of an approximately 30-minute walk from the entrance-area bus stop; use a current route planner to confirm where your particular service stops.
For a taxi visit, save the pickup point and arrange how you will request the return ride before entering. For a rental-car visit, include parking and preparation time in your schedule. Avoid building the day around an old blog’s airport driving time, which cannot account for your actual starting point or traffic.
Dress for the cave, not just the weather outside
The heritage authority recommends practical shoes and a warm jacket, and prohibits high heels, pets and food inside. Pack so that both hands can be free when needed. Visitors who need a step-free route should ask the operator about the current entrance and path before buying tickets; this guide does not certify wheelchair or stroller access.
Follow the marked route and staff instructions, keep belongings close and avoid touching formations. If anyone in your group becomes uncomfortable underground, make returning calmly the priority rather than reaching the final photo spot.
A flexible northeast-Jeju day
Keep the cave as your timed anchor and leave a coastal walk or meal flexible afterward. Check the individual access rules for other caves: being nearby does not make a cave open to tourists. Use the Jeju first-timer guide to group stops by area, and retain an alternative if underground access changes.
